Non-contact measurement of long distances and spatial position
Sensors in this category are used for contactless measurements of long distances and spatial position. Laser light time sensors have a wide range measurement, perfect repeatability, fast response time and attractive price.
The laser pulse is sent to the measured object, and the sensor precisely measures the time needed to return the reflected pulse to the sensor. The receiver compares the phase shift of the transmitted signal with the received one, thanks to which you can accurately calculate the distance.
The range can be measured based on the speed of the light and the period of time being measured. Popular applications of these sensors outside of industrial automation are distance measurements in ports, crane equipment, external warehouses, etc.
Laser scanners are most often used in mobile robotics to detection of objects, determining the distance from an obstacle, or determining the trajectory of motion or placing a robot on the basis of landmarks.
Other applications for these sensors are building automation, safety, for example, carriages. In industry, they can be used, for example, to dynamically determine geometrical dimensions of the analyzed object or to detect elements appearing in a given space.
