April 6, 2021, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Poland (TMMP) has launched the production of an electric transmission for low-emission electric hybrid drives in Wałbrzych. The new transmission will work with the latest generation 1.5-liter engine designed based on Toyota's global design platform TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture), the production of which started in June 2020 in Jelcz-Laskowice. In this way, both Polish Toyota plants produce the hybrid powertrain, i.e. the heart of the car. These units will go to the new generation Toyota Yaris produced in France and from August this year. also in the Czech Republic.
Last year, the Yaris, which is the most popular Toyota model in Europe, accounted for more than a fifth (20.9%) of all cars that left European Toyota showrooms, and its share in the B segment increased to 8.4%. At the same time, in Poland, Yaris accounted for 24.42% of all registered Toyota cars, and every third individual customer in the B segment chose this model. The new generation of Toyota Yaris won the title of the European Car of the Year 2021. Hybrid powertrains with TMMP will also go to the Toyota Yaris Cross, Toyota's first B-segment SUV to be produced in France this year.
As part of the investment, Toyota expanded its Foundry plant in Wałbrzych by 1700 m2 for the needs of a new housing casting line and installed new processing lines and an assembly line in the current gearbox hall, equipped with, among others, self-driving MOBOT mobile robots.
With the launch of the project, TMMP begins, for the first time in history, the production of MG1 electric motors as an integral part of the electric hybrid transmission. Additionally, this autumn in Wałbrzych a twin transmission line will be launched, and at the beginning of next year, another production line of 1.5-liter TNGA hybrid engines will be launched. In this way, the production of electric hybrid drives for Toyota Yaris and Yaris Cross will be doubled. In connection with these projects, the plant in Wałbrzych is conducting intensive recruitment activities aimed at employing more than 300 employees.
According to the concern, the latest TMMP investments constitute a key element of Toyota Motor Europe's strategy, which aims to further locate the production of electric hybrid drives in Europe, so as to achieve the company's goals of selling 1.4 million vehicles annually by 2025. Toyota plans 90% of sales to be electrified powertrains: hybrids, plug-in hybrids, battery-powered and hydrogen-powered zero-emission vehicles.
After the complete launch of the current projects, in 2022, in the Polish Toyota plants in Wałbrzych and Jelcz-Laskowice, a total of six production lines of the main hybrid components will operate, including three lines of electric hybrid transmissions and three lines of engines designed in the TNGA architecture. Additionally, in 2020 TMMP launched the Hybrid Drives Testing and Evaluation Department, which aims to accelerate the process of testing hybrid drives and locating the production of hybrid components in Europe.
